About Winslow
Winslow is located on the western border of Navajo County in northeastern Arizona. It lies in the Little Colorado River Valley and is 58 miles east of Flagstaff, along Interstate 40. Winslow is a tourist western city founded in 1880 and incorporated in 1900. They say that its name comes from a railroad company president, Edward Winslow.
30 miles south of the city, in the The Apache Sitgreaves National Forest, you can go camping, fishing and practice a lot of water sports. Near Winslow tourists can admire an abundance of physical landforms, spectacular canyon landscapes and prehistoric ruins in the Meteor Crater (formerly know as Canyon del Muerto, the NASA designated training site for US astronauts), the Sunset Crater, and the Canyon de Chelly National Monuments. The Meteor Crater was declared a national natural landmark in 1967 and Canyon de Chelly in 1931. 60 miles east of Winslow, near the Painted Desert it is located the Petrified Foresta National Park.
The main tourist attractions is Winslow include the Homolovi Ruins State Park, a prehistoric archaeological site consisting in ruins from the time of the Anasazi (ancestors of the Hopi People); The Little Painted Desert, situated 18 miles north of Winslow, a site of colorful badlands especially beautiful at sunset and sunrise; Clear Creek Reservoir located 5 miles southeast of Winslow where tourists can try their luck at fishing cutthroat trout and Kokanee Salmon.
Downtown Winslow, tourists can admire La Posada, the last Fred Harvey Hotel surviving in the West. In the hearth of Winslow, across the world famous Standin' on the Corner Park there is also The Old trails Museum, where visitors can view displays about the Santa Fe Railroad, Ranching, Trading Posts and Route 66, prehistoric Native American artifacts and fossils. The Standin' on the Corner Park is an attractive site for the music lovers. And who can forget the name of Winslow immortalized in the lyrics of the song "Take It Easy" performed by The Eagles "Are you from Standin' - On - A - Corner - In - Winslow, Arizona"
